Cortec Corporation has published a detailed guide to "Layup of Land Based Drilling Rigs" to provide operators with practical solutions for the preservation of their assets.

Due to the extended shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, land-based oil drilling rigs were shut down, leading operators to look for practical preservation solutions. To help rig operators avoid loss from equipment corrosion, Cortec ® offers - with its guide to Layup of Land Based Drilling Rigs- detailed instructions on how to use preservation materials, simplify preservation and minimize or eliminate disposal problems. Cortec®' guide also explains how to use VpCI® Technology to protect mud pumps and boilers, top drives and draw works, different sizes of HPUs and electricals/electronics, diesel engines, hydraulic catwalks, drill pipes, air compressors and so on.

Among the recommended protective solutions there are:

* Cortec® oil additives;
  • VpCI® Emitters, VpCI®-126 HP UV Shrink Film or MilCorr® VpCI® Shrink Film;
  • VpCI®-649;
  • VpCI®-337
  • CorrLube(TM) VpCI® Lithium EP Grease;
  • CorShield® VpCI®-369.
The guide also gives instructions on how to spray ElectriCorr® VpCI®-239 inside electrical/electronic enclosures and apply VpCI®®-105 Emitters, VpCI®-111 Emitters, or VpCI®-308 Pouches according to the space's volume. These products can also be used to protect sensitive and critical components such as computers and touchscreens. They are extremely easy to remove at startup, if they need to be removed at all, and some may continue to be used for corrosion protection during operation.

As for the lubrication systems, oil and gear systems of drill rig equipment, Cortec includes in the guide its range of corrosion inhibiting additives, which play an important role effective preservation for hidden but critical systems and can be easily removed if necessary. Other additives, coatings or injectable products that inhibit corrosion listed in the guide meet the needs of cooling systems, fuel systems and insulated and non-insulated pipes on a drilling platform.
