The new internal coating Accelshield 700 from AkzoNobel can be easily integrated into existing can manufacturing processes.
The Packaging division of the coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel
has recently presented Accelshield 700, a new BPA-NI (Bisphenol A non-intent) internal coating for beverage can ends that does not employ bisphenol-based epoxies as part of its manufacturing process, thus complying with both Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and EU regulations.
The new product will help meet the surge in demand for alternative coatings that is expected after the recent opinion on BPA restrictions in metal packaging for food and beverage of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The new coating has been specifically designed for challenging foods and liquids – including those that are very acidic or require high-temperature sterilisation processes such as yogurt drinks, milk and coffee – in addition to soft drinks and beer.
“With the technological advancements, bisphenols are no longer required to create safe coatings for state-of-the-art metal can packaging. BPA-NI coatings are a significant innovation, marking a critical turning point for the industry. Accelshield 700 will help can makers future-proof their selection,” has stated Chris Bradford, the marketing director of AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings.
Accelshield 700 also can be easily integrated into existing manufacturing processes, allowing can producers to mitigate disruptions while also prioritising consumer safety and sustainability with responsible material substitutions.
