HMG’s Ferrozinc and C71 Speedline played a key role in the recycling centre refurbishment.

An innovative rust and lead contamination treatment from HMG Paints has enabled the Brynsworthy Environmental Centre in North Devon (United Kingdom) to remain fully operational during refurbishment. This advanced coating system resolved critical maintenance challenges without requiring a facility shutdown.

Structural steel at the Brynsworthy Environment Centre and Waste Management Facility, near Barnstaple, showed signs of light rust contamination. Further testing revealed lead in the existing coatings. While conventional remediation methods, such as shot blasting and complete coating removal, were considered, they would have necessitated a facility shutdown—disrupting recycling operations and significantly increasing costs.

To avoid this, Exeter-based contractor Isca Decorating Company collaborated with HMG Paints, leveraging the company’s technical expertise and specialised coatings. The tailored coating system was supplied by decorators’ merchants Rabart from their Plymouth store. The refurbishment process began with a thorough cleaning and degreasing of the steel substrate. A high-quality water-based foaming degreaser was applied first, followed by HMG’s solvent degreaser 2801 for optimal surface preparation.

“This is the first project where we have used the full system. It is very easy to use and apply, similar to standard undercoats and gloss systems. The C71 Speedline topcoat covers particularly well and looks very nice in the satin finish. We will certainly be using and recommending it for future use,” has added Lee Perrott, Isca Decorating Company’s managing director.

To address rust contamination, HMG Ferrozinc Rust Converter was applied, transforming from a white coating to navy/black as it neutralized the rust. Lead-contaminated areas were then primed with HMG’s BDX Anti-Corrosive Primer, ensuring a secure and stable base. The final step involved applying a durable topcoat of HMG C71 Speedline, a hardwearing finish available in a wide range of colours, offering both long-term protection and enhanced aesthetics.

So, by using HMG Paints' advanced coatings and expert guidance, the Brynsworthy Environmental Centre successfully completed essential maintenance without interrupting its critical recycling operations.
