The Intersmooth® fouling control technology developed by AkzoNobel has been specified to help to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

The international paints and coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel has recently announced that its Marine, Protective and Yacht Coatings business has contributed to protect the first Chinese domestic large cruise ship Adora Magic City by providing the Intersmooth® fouling control technology.

The high-performance Intersmooth fouling control technology was specified on the hull due to its high durability, low VOC content and excellent application properties. In addition to prevent biofouling accumulation, the coating will also provide resistance against chemical agents, impact and abrasion – thus helping to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. The operators will also be able to benefit from the Intertrac software, which uses big data to support underwater hull scheme selection and predict and maximise lifetime performance, while considering key industry regulations.

“We are proud that our trusted coatings technology and expertise played an important role and we have been extremely impressed during a recent visit to see the final fitting out of this landmark vessel. We hope to be involved in similar projects in the future and remain committed to supporting the application and development of advanced coatings that will help propel our customers and the industry to a more sustainable future,” has stated Simon Parker, the director of the Marine, Protective and Yacht Coatings division of AkzoNobel.

Adora Magic City, weighing 135,500 tons, is 323.6 meters long, can host 5,246-passengers as well as 1,292 staff members and contains more than 25 million different parts. The ship was built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd – with the construction works taking over three years – with the cooperation of more than thirty countries and over 8,000 specialised suppliers. AkzoNobel is also contributing to the new-build sister ship.

“Our ability to support global projects and supply chains provides value for customers of our Marine Coatings business. Our international brand has been meeting customer needs in this respect for more than 140 years. We are constantly innovating to keep pace with evolving requirements, with a clear focus on supporting customers in yard efficiency, boosting lifetime performance and reducing both fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions in operation,” has added Parker.
