With the new photovoltaic system, Chemetall expects to reduce the CO2 emissions of the Boksburg facility by 92%.

The international specialty chemical manufacturer BASF has recently announced that Chemetall – its global business unit dedicated to surface treatments – has successfully implemented an advanced photovoltaic system at its Boksburg (South Africa) site, marking a significant step toward greater sustainability.

The new state-of-the-art photovoltaic system has been specifically installed to provide a reliable and stable energy supply for the administration offices, the manufacturing plants and the warehouses. It includes 1,725 m2 of solar panels on the roofs, as well as 600 kW battery storage systems.

Through the project, Chemetall expects to reduce the CO2 emissions of the Boksburg facility by 92%, cutting current energy costs and contributing to the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The continuous improvement of the carbon footprint of BASF also supports its customers in reaching their sustainability targets.

“We are proud to provide more sustainable surface treatment solutions that support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals. Sustainability is a corporate responsibility, and we are committed to implementing more sustainable processes and using renewable energy sources in our facilities worldwide. Our advanced photovoltaic system in Boksburg is another step toward improving our carbon footprint while increasing our operational autonomy and reliability in South Africa,” has stated Frank Naber, the senior vice-president of Chemetall.
