Henkel was awarded by the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment for its commitment to sustainability.
Henkel was awarded by the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment for demonstrating remarkable innovation in an advanced manufacturing process that has a significant environmental and economic impact. The award recognizes the use of the Pallumina thin-film process on 2021 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra.
The Pallumina thin film process is effective on all major metals and can process up to 100% aluminium, further enabling the use of this lightweight metal. According to the Center for Automotive Research, aluminium use is expected to double from around 13% of today's cars and trucks to 26% by 2040.
Pre-treatment of the metal is an essential part of vehicle manufacturing, as it allows the paint to adhere to the vehicle body, preventing corrosion. Henkel's thin-film process reduces the production steps of a conventional metal pre-treatment process from seven to four. On an environmental level, this translates into the elimination of heavy metal phosphates, up to 90% reduction in sludge production and decreased water consumption.
The process uses a metal-oxide conversion coating versus a zinc phosphate-based conversion coating, significantly reducing sludge generation, the need for metal etching and the use of fluoride additives. Furthermore, the need for regular tank cleaning is reduced and annual chemical cleanings are completely eliminated, reducing sludge disposal costs and labour costs.
“Today’s automotive OEMs are looking for solutions that enhance sustainability, while reducing costs, simplifying processes and delivering high performance. Henkel’s thin-film processes deliver on all of these – offering an exceptional solution for paint shop processes”, said Cris Naida, Vice President Automotive OEM Americas, Henkel.
The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment represents players across the automotive value chain, including many of the world's largest car manufacturers and suppliers. The organization works for a shared vision of an automotive industry with a positive environmental impact.
