Cortec’s CorroLogic® provides advanced vapor-phase protection, enhancing the longevity and safety of airport ASTs by preventing corrosion, reducing maintenance costs, and minimising downtime.

Airports consume vast amounts of jet fuel daily, requiring extensive on-site storage in aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). With stringent safety and environmental regulations in place, protecting these tanks from corrosion is crucial. Traditionally, cathodic protection (CP) has been the industry standard for preventing corrosion. However, over the past two decades, Cortec’s CorroLogic® Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VCIs) have emerged as a cutting-edge solution for enhancing corrosion protection in airport fuel storage tanks.

Corrosion poses a significant threat to the structural integrity of storage tanks, particularly their floors. Left unchecked, it can lead to leaks, environmental hazards, and costly repairs. CP systems help prevent corrosion by delivering an electrical current to offset the electrochemical reactions that cause metal deterioration. However, uneven tank floors and shifting loads can create air pockets that interrupt CP efficiency, leaving certain areas vulnerable to corrosion.

Unlike CP, CorroLogic® is distributed via vapor action, diffusing throughout void spaces to form a molecular protective layer on all exposed metal surfaces. This approach ensures comprehensive coverage, effectively safeguarding the tank bottom even in areas where CP may fall short. Additionally, research indicates that CorroLogic® and CP can work synergistically when used together, further enhancing corrosion prevention.

One of the standout advantages of CorroLogic® is its flexibility and ease of application. It requires no external power source and can be introduced at any stage of a tank’s lifecycle—during construction or even while the tank is in service. This eliminates the need for costly fuel drainage and minimizes operational downtime. With two decades of successful field application, CorroLogic® has gained industry recognition, with its underlying VCI technology recently incorporated into API Technical Report 655 and AMPP SP21474-2023.

For the aviation industry, which relies heavily on ASTs, corrosion prevention solutions must be both effective and economically viable. CorroLogic® meets these demands by offering a non-invasive, vapor-phase protection method that complements existing CP systems and remains effective even if CP power is lost. As airports seek smarter and more efficient ways to maintain fuel storage infrastructure, CorroLogic® presents a reliable and innovative solution.
