To support Circular Economy and present the market with a viable alternative to traditional moisture barrier packaging, Cortec(r) Corporation developed EcoShield(r) Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard, which are coated with a water-based barrier coating that resists moisture, grease and oil, and allows recycling and repulping.
To support the conservation of both economic and environmental resources, and the need of the paper packaging sector for materials that can be repulped and made into other paper products, Cortec® Corporation developed EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard.
Contrary to traditional moisture barrier packaging, which entail the use of polyethylene and wax coatings to seal porous paper to create a moisture barrier, and therefore are not recyclable through normal channels, EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard are coated with a water-based barrier coating that resists moisture, grease, and oil but allows recycling and repulping into other types of paper products such as boxes, cardboard, and other corrugated materials, contributing to a circular economy.
When tested according to ASTM E-96, EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper shows a Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) comparable to polycoated paper and far superior to waxed paper:

EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard can be used in a variety of applications, such as packaging oily and greasy parts/items or protecting other moisture sensitive components. To broaden its potential uses, EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard are made from components formulated in compliance with FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21:
- §176.170-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods;
- §176.180-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with dry food.
EcoShield® Recyclable Barrier Paper and Linerboard can be ordered in a variety of custom sizes, from pre-cut sheets for end users to jumbo rolls for packaging suppliers and paper converters.
