PPG will invest over  $11 million to meet the expected future demand for powder coatings in Mexico.

PPG has recently announced that it will invest more than $11 million to double its production capacity for powder coatings in the San Juan del Rio (Mexico) plant. The investment will include the installation of new production lines and upgrades to existing equipment.

Expected to be completed by mid-2023, the expansion will allow the company to meet the expected future demand for powder coatings in the region. In addition, PPG will be able to locally manufacture new powder coatings that are currently supplied from the U.S.A., such as:

  • ENVIROCRON® High Transfer Efficiency (HTE) powder coatings for difficult-to-coat surfaces;
  • Envirocron Extreme Protection Edge powder coatings for improved edge corrosion performance in one coat;
  • Envirocron HeatSense low-temperature-cure powder coatings for wood-based substrates and metals;
  • CORAFLON® Platinum powder coating for architectural aluminium extrusions.

“With this investment, the plant will have new, state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, enhancing production practices and process flow. It will further improve the plant's productivity and benefit our customers with improved service levels and faster response,” has stated Guillermo Peña, the director for Industrial Coatings at PPG Mexico.

The powder coatings developed by the company provide high transfer efficiency, enhanced durability, the ability to be reclaimed or reused during application and, above all, low VOC emissions. So, they play an important role in PPG’s commitment to achieve 40% of sales from products and processes that have improved sustainability by 2025.

“This expansion reaffirms PPG's confidence in Mexico and the strategic role of the San Juan del Rio site for the powder coatings business. Powder coating technology is becoming a more functional and profitable option for many customers due to its superior protection, sustainable qualities and higher transfer efficiency compared to liquid coating technology,” has added Kevin Braun, the global vice-president of Industrial Coatings at PPG.

Besides the expansion of the Mexican site, that meets the key IATF-16949 quality certification, in 2022 PPG has also acquired Arsonsisi’s powder coatings manufacturing business.
