The new powder coatings technology of AkzoNobel Resicoat provides improved electrical protection for electric vehicle battery systems in just one spray.
The Powder Coatings division of international paints and coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel, in view of the growing demand for coatings in the electric vehicle market
with high dielectric strength, has developed a solution that enables customers to achieve the required film thickness with a single spray, helping to increase the efficiency, productivity and safety of battery systems.
“We’ve developed innovative technology which addresses a clear need within the industry and helps to improve safety. It’s an important breakthrough which means customers no longer have to spray twice or more to achieve the right thickness for providing high dielectric strength. Thanks to decades of knowledge and non-stop innovation, we understand how exceptional powder coatings, combined with the right application technique, can provide consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of key battery system components. It’s further proof of our commitment to supporting our customers through partnerships and product development to create, fuel and protect the innovations of the future,” has stated Jeff Jirak, Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business.
The new technology, available in China, is suitable for battery system parts such as cooling plates, side plates and battery cover. The ability to create a homogeneous film with a single application means that the entire process is more efficient in terms of increased speed and throughput, reduced working hours and improved resource utilisation. Moreover, AkzoNobel’s newly developed one-spray technology provides resistance against thermal shock, water immersion and chemicals, as well as boosting the safety of EV battery systems.
“Working with customers throughout the value chain has put us in a unique position to understand the needs of the market. Our strong global footprint means they can benefit from our ability to deliver consistency in product and service worldwide,” has added Jeff Jirak.
Since the 1960s, AkzoNobel's Resicoat powder coatings have addressed the challenge of electrical insulation in various industries. In 2023, they introduced a specialized range, Resicoat EV powder coatings, aimed at enhancing the safety and performance of electric vehicle components like battery systems and electric motors.
