The CX-rated anticorrosive powder coating developed by Jotun protects steel used in the most extreme environments to prevent critical equipment from corrosion.

The international paints and coatings manufacturer Jotun has launched the first and only CX-rated anticorrosive powder coating solution. This innovative technology offers good protection for critical equipment operating in the harshest environments - addressing a significant challenge that costs industries trillions of dollars annually in steel corrosion.

“In addition to costs related to maintenance, protecting steel can reduce risk of equipment failure that can lead to downtime, or worse, an accident. To help manage these challenges, Jotun has developed the industry’s first anticorrosive powder coatings solution specifically engineered to protect steel used in the most extreme environments,” has stated Harshad Gawande, Jotun’s Global Category Manager for Functional Powder Coatings.

Setting New Standards with ISO 12944 CX Compliance

The ISO 12944 Standard, which outlines atmospheric corrosion categories, was updated in 2018 to include CX, a rating for highly aggressive environments like offshore areas with high salinity or industrial zones in subtropical regions. In response, Jotun developed the Jotun Primax Coating Solutions, a powder coating that is Qualisteel compliant and independently tested to meet the ISO 12944 CX requirements.

“We are the only coatings supplier which can provide third-party documentation for surfaces that are blast cleaned, galvanised or chemically treated with zinc phosphates. We are also the only company that works with approved applicators to offer a product guarantee, supported by our dedicated technical support teams,” has added Harshad Gawande.

Primax Coating Solutions: A Two-Layer System

Primax Coating Solutions are designed to protect steel in critical machinery such as generators, transformers, electrical cabinets and cranes. The system features a two-layer anticorrosive protection involving primers and Jotun Super Durable, a topcoat that boasts resistance to extreme temperatures, high humidity, acid rain, and UV exposure, ensuring long-lasting color and gloss retention.

“The Worldsteel Association estimated that steel production is responsible for between seven/nine% of global emissions, representing about 3.5 billion tonnes of CO₂ per year. Providing long term protection reduces the need for replacement steel, and because powder coatings is applied in controlled environments, the risk of application errors are eliminated. And for companies seeking to comply with emerging regulations on the use of VOCs, powder coatings are solvent free. There are other systems out there, but none of them have been independently rated CX or can offer technical, commercial and performance advantages of Jotun Primax Solutions. And we have the documentation to prove it,” has concluded Harshad Gawande.
