PPG announced a series of presentations on recent innovations developed for vehicle manufacturers and tiered suppliers during SURCAR Detroit 2021.
Four members of PPG's automotive OEM coatings team will give a series of presentations on the latest innovations developed specifically for vehicle manufacturers and tiered suppliers during SURCAR Detroit 2021, taking place September 28-29 at the Roostertail event center in Detroit, Michigan.
Presentations will take place on 29 September and will focus on optimizing coating and curing processes, improving the appearance of vehicles and accelerating the development of new colours.
The program
At 10:55 a.m., Courtney Balliet, PPG Senior Group Leader, Adhesives and Sealants, and Vivek Badarinarayana, PPG Group Leader, Substrate Protection Systems, will introduce a new solution that reduces the complexity and cost of curing vehicles that have mixed materials and complex joints. Their presentation “Integrating ED and Adhesive Expanded Capabilities to Resolve NEV Challenges” will highlight the use of PPG ENVIRO-PRIME® electrocoat and PPG CORABOND™ structural adhesive to reduce the cure temperature differential on each vehicle. This eliminates the need to overheat some areas/joints to avoid underbaking others, helps vehicle manufacturers reduce oven temperatures, process complexity and unit cost.
At 2:05 p.m., Zachary Geyser, PPG Lead Customer Support Chemist, will join representatives from Lucid Motors and FANUC to describe the development of a high-quality paint shop. Speakers will illustrate the efficiency and quality benefits of an approach whereby vehicle manufacturers and their equipment and coatings suppliers define objectives, evaluate product/process options and determine operational parameters prior to vehicle launch.
Finally, at 3:20 p.m. will be held the presentation entitled “The Future of Colour Development - Digital Colour Styling”, in which Sabine Griesbeck, PPG Digital Transformation Technical Manager, will talk about the new digital styling platform of the company, which aims to help designers to accelerate the colour development process. This new feature allows OEM design teams to collaborate with PPG experts directly, remotely and in real time. Prior to this program, the process of finalizing a colour based on a designer's initial concept could take up to nine months.
