The AkzoNobel Dulux paints have revitalised Malaysia’s historic city of Malacca with vibrant shades, preserving its rich local culture.
The international paints and coatings supplier AkzoNobel
has repainted the Malaysia’s historic city of Malacca to preserve the vibrant culture and identity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Moreover, AkzoNobel’s Dulux products have been used to coat shophouse façades along the Malacca River and revive a popular mural, as well as developing a special shade of red to refresh the Stadthuys city hall and surrounding buildings in the old town square.
“The importance of protecting the historical legacy of these buildings can’t be overstated. Many of them are almost 500 years old and each one can tell a story. That’s why we’re so passionate about using our expertise to safeguard cultural heritage and make the past a part of the future. These buildings are a symbol of the past, but they’re also an expression of the multi-cultural tradition and architecture of the time, and that’s why people look at them with fondness and treasure them as part of their heritage, but this project isn’t just about preserving the buildings. It will also help provide economic opportunities for the local community and create long-term benefits by attracting tourism. All through the power of paint,” has stated My Lan Nguyen, Director of AkzoNobel’s Decorative Paints ASEAN business.
The Dulux brand first collaborated with the state government of Malacca in 2014, when 26 heritage buildings and monuments were repainted. The latest project has revitalised the town’s distinctive architecture and is expected to significantly contribute to local development.
“We’re thrilled to partner with AkzoNobel in this important initiative to preserve and enhance Malacca’s cultural heritage. This collaboration has not only improved the aesthetics of the city, but also showcases its rich history and vibrant culture,” has added Datuk Shadan Othman, Mayor of Malacca Historic City Council.
Once a bustling hub of trade and cultural exchange between East and West, Malacca became the most pivotal trading port in Southeast Asia during the 16th century. Today, it stands as one of Malaysia's most captivating destinations. Malacca is among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites where AkzoNobel's products are featured, joining other iconic locations such as La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain; Westminster Abbey in London, UK; Göbekli Tepe in Türkiye; Kinderdijk in the Netherlands; and Ouro Preto in Brazil.
