Hempel's silicone coating Hempaguard X7 is now validated by DNV, enabling the company to decarbonise the maritime sector more rapidly and expand its customer base.

The international coatings manufacturer Hempel has recently received validation from the third-party entity DNV for its solution Hempaguard X7, a silicone-based hull coating – thereby accelerating decarbonisation efforts in the maritime sector.

“At Hempel, we’ve long known that Hempaguard stands out in the industry for its superior performance and environmental benefits, helping our customers save costs and improve their bottom line. But DNV’s third-party validation and verification is an important milestone for us to reach, and it only reinforces the credibility of Hempaguard’s unmatched performance in the market,” has commented Alexander Enström, Executive Vice-President and Head of Marine at Hempel A/S.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced more ambitious decarbonisation targets in 2023, which have driven increased demand for Hempaguard. Industry stakeholders are actively seeking solutions to reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint immediately. DNV’s verification objectively confirms Hempaguard's good performance in reducing CO2 emissions in the maritime industry. In addition, the third-party validation has demonstrated fuel savings of up to 20% and an average speed loss of only 1.4 %.

“Our customers’ demand for Hempaguard clearly confirms the impact of this premium anti-fouling solution, and we recently passed yet another significant milestone: over 4000 applications worldwide with Hempaguard, equivalent to taking approximately 5,125,978 cars off the roads in saved CO2e emissions,” Alexander Enström concludes.
