The new Sher-Bar TEC coating from Sherwin-Williams increases the corrosion resistance of rebars, enhancing infrastructure longevity, safety and sustainability.
The Protective & Marine division of the international paints and coatings manufacturer Sherwin-Williams
has recently introduced the textured epoxy coating for rebar Sher-Bar TEC, a new transformative coating technology for the concrete industry specifically developed for improving corrosion resistance of rebars, enhancing then infrastructure longevity, safety and sustainability.
Offering increased bond strength, damage tolerance and corrosion resistance
for both horizontal and vertical concrete projects, the new solution has the potential to significantly extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure assets. Sher-Bar TEC also provides favourable sustainability impacts: made with up to 30% upcycled materials redirected from landfills, it supports environmentally friendly practices and promotes the potential use of alternative cementitious technologies that could reduce the significant carbon emissions associated with concrete production.
“Sher-Bar TEC is a breakthrough in concrete and construction innovation. The textured epoxy coating has the potential to significantly extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure assets – offering a cost-effective solution that adds unprecedented value. With this novel TEC technology, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine is ushering in a new era of infrastructure protection and sustainability,” has stated Jeffrey Rogozinski, the global director of functional coatings for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine.
Tests by several independent laboratories and research universities have documented and demonstrated the superior performance in bond strength, durability and corrosion resistance of Sher-Bar TEC: according to a Wisconsin Department of Transportation study, it can reduce rebar overlap by 10% to 60%, helping to lower project weights, raw material costs and logistical expenses while also potentially allowing for the use of higher grades of concrete. The research led also to the development of the new ASTM A1124/A1124M-23 Standard Specification for Textured Epoxy-Coated Steel Reinforcing Bars, underlining the importance of textured epoxy coatings in the construction industry.
“Extensive testing has shown that Sher-Bar TEC is a unique and value-adding solution compared to existing rebar coatings and black bar. Its performance marks a significant leap forward in the realm of concrete reinforcement,” has also added Anthony Del Percio, the North American sales manager for rebar, valve and traffic markings for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine.
