AkzoNobel's marine coatings will safeguard the Chinese vessel against harsh and unpredictable conditions, significantly prolonging its service life.
The international paints and coatings supplier AkzoNobel
has safeguarded China’s groundbreaking deep-sea drilling vessel, the ‘Dream’, with over 300,000 litres of its advanced International® marine coatings. This cutting-edge vessel, capable of drilling up to 11,000 meters into the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, marks a significant milestone in ocean engineering and scientific exploration
“We were honored to support this landmark project. We developed a customized solution, applying all our experience and expertise to ensure the vessel is equipped to endure the harsh and unpredictable conditions, while significantly extending its service life,” has stated Simon Parker, Director of the company’s Marine and Protective Coatings business.
Stretching nearly 180 meters in length, the Dream is equipped for a variety of missions, including deep-sea resource exploration, oceanic scientific drilling, and long-range marine research. Designed to endure extreme maritime conditions, including super typhoons, the vessel can operate continuously for up to 120 days at sea.
The Dream is protected by a suite of International® coatings to ensure peak performance and durability, such as Intershield 300, Intersmooth 7465Si, and Interthane 990. These cutting-edge products provide exceptional weather resistance, anti-corrosion capabilities, and anti-fouling performance, critical for long-term operations in challenging marine environments.
“This is a significant breakthrough in China's key technology and equipment for deep-sea exploration. In addition to supplying top quality coating products with exceptional performance, AkzoNobel has also provided comprehensive technical support and on-site services, laying a solid foundation for the vessel’s exploration and research missions,” has added Hu Lin, Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey Bureau.
AkzoNobel’s expertise in marine coatings extends beyond the Dream. Indeed, the company also supplied International® products for China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, and the country’s first domestically built icebreaker, Xuelong 2.
