AkzoNobel Will Coat the New Monna Lisa Ship

The new Monna Lisa ship will be coated with AkzoNobel's International® products to reduce CO2 emissions and minimise fuel consumption.

The international paints and coating manufacturer AkzoNobel, through its International®marine coatings brand, has announced that the cable-laying vessel Monna Lisa will be coated with its Intergard® 7500 primer and Intersmooth® 7465Si antifouling solution.

The operation will reduce the vessel’s carbon emissions by approximately 672 tonnes over the dry-docking period and lower Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) by more than 11 tonnes during construction. As a matter of fact, the shipyard can reduce VOC emissions during application and significantly decrease packaging by eliminating over 1,000 waste tins by using the Intergard 7500, a high solids universal primer solution.

Ship owners face increasing regulatory pressure to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) announcing new carbon targets for the fleet last year. AkzoNobel and Prysmian investigated several coating options and scenarios using the Intertrac Vision forecasting tool to optimise and select the best scheme to provide the optimum economic solution and maximise sustainability benefits. In addition, Monna Lisa will be the second new-build ship owned by Prysmian on which International coatings will be applied, further reinforcing the partnership between the two companies and the builder Vard Group.

Intergard® 7500 and Intersmooth® 7465Si

  • Intergard 7500 is an aluminium containing pure epoxy product that offers superior corrosion protection and abrasion resistance, leading to significant maintenance cost savings for shipowners compared to other modified epoxy universal primers, especially when applied during newbuilding;
  • Intersmooth 74765Si, the chosen fouling control solution, is a low friction self-polishing copolymer antifouling which will keep a smooth clean hull in operation for the owner, minimising fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions.
