SUPERPOSITION is this year’s colour collection by BASF, focused on simultaneity and functionality.

BASF designers have released SUPERPOSITION, the 2021-2022 Automotive Color Trends. Borrowing its name from a quantum mechanics phenomenon (a state where the limitation of binary system is overcome), the collection is the result of BASF’s Coating Division studies and research that will be used to develop paints and coatings for industry, fashion and consumer products.

The colours specifically designed for the EMEA automotive market employ familiar colour positions, yet they are now subjected to new effects, subtle colour gradients or specific sparkle behaviour. The shades of grey change their colourfulness according to the angle of view, while blue hues are light and reflective.

“These eye-opening and thought-provoking colors are a superposition of complex tones that challenge our perception,” stated Mark Gutjahr, head of Automotive Color Design for EMEA market.

The Asia Pacific region instead has witnessed important societal change during 2021, with much time to recharge, think ahead and build energy for the future. That is why, from uniformity, there is now a clear trend towards flexibility and freedom.

“Asia Pacific’s key colors are light, clean shades evoking the exciting look of spring and the forward-looking hope it brings. They show a higher level of understanding of our diverse world,” commented Chiharu Matsuhara, head of Automotive Design for Asia Pacific market.

Finally, future automotive colour designs for North America have been inspired by the concept of balance, optimism and resilience, representing the potential for humanity to move forward.

“We found the equilibrium between the natural and the synthetic world to create calming, unwavering, and thought-provoking colors. They draw the viewer into unique sensations that operate on multiple non-binary levels,” concluded Paul Czornij, head of Automotive Design for the Americas.
