Date: 21/10/2024

Dürr Brasil was established in 1964 as an engineering office for planning the paint shop for the Volkswagen plant based in São Paulo.

The German engineering company Dürr is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Brazilian subsidiary, which has been providing paint, sealant and adhesive application robots as well as direct technical support to the major car manufacturers in the region for six decades.

Established in 1964, it now not only delivers plant engineering systems and environmental technologies designed to ensure quality and safety in final assembly and in automotive painting, but it offers also energy efficiency, reliability and a deep understanding of the needs of its local customers.

In the last ten years, the company has proved to be a successful partner– especially during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic – also by installing and integrating handling and assembly manipulators and robotic systems used to move, position and assemble parts during the car painting process.

A brief history of Dürr Brasil

Dürr Brasil Industrial Equipment S.A. was founded by Otto Dürr and his son Heinz on 11th December 1964 as an engineering office for planning a paint shop for the Volkswagen plant based in São Paulo. The car manufacturer started the operations in the region in 1953 and soon expanded its site in São Bernardo do Campo through several trustworthy partnerships. Dürr had already established an excellent reputation and was particularly well-known for its significant contribution to earlier Volkswagen projects. So, the company received its first commission to build a complete paint shop and the founder decided to establish the Brazilian branch – the first Dürr subsidiary outside of Germany – to be as close to the customer as possible.

By 1970, the company had established itself as the market leader in Brazil and in the ‘80s it operated across national borders, with equipment for Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Siderca delivered to Argentina, Chile and Venezuela. At the end of the ‘90s, Dürr Brasil also provided solutions for the paint shops of Mercedes-Benz in Juiz de Fora, Audi and Renault-Nissan in Curitiba and Peugeot-Citroën in Porto Real.

In 2006, a fire erupted in the headquarters of the company. Luckily, no humans were injured, but the event demanded a high level of cooperation from everyone involved. Thanks to the effective administration and management, however, Dürr Brasil recovered successfully, the building was renovated and professional relationships between employees were strengthened – as they were more determined than ever to commit to the company.

What the future holds for Dürr Brasil

With over 300 employees, Dürr Brasil has announced that it will continue its path of growth by expanding its offering in other areas, such as balancing machines and solutions for surface treatment, painting and final assembly. Furthermore, it will also boost engineering excellence and technical progress by incorporating all the latest developments into its products.

“Dürr Brasil places great emphasis on honesty towards its customers, competence and the ability to turn difficult situations into opportunities, offering a wide range of products, services and solutions. I am highly optimistic about the future and I have a clear idea of where the developments in the area of coating systems are headed. Our company history has brought us to 2024 with greater strength and stability than ever before. We have always endeavoured to offer innovation and technology to our customers,” has stated Roberto Tkatchuk, the president of Dürr Brasil.
