Data compiled from ships show that the coating Intersleek 1100SR® by AkzoNobel helped reduce fuel bills by $8 billion and emissions by 41 million tons.
The Intersleek ®1100SR coating is a solution developed by AkzoNobel Marine and Protective Coatings, which consists of a biocide-free fouling control coating with patented silt release technology to
combat microfouling on ship hulls. The product works by removing any slime accumulated during docking – thus helping to significantly reduce drag, improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
As a matter of fact, performance data collected from over 3,000 ships shows that the coating has drastically decreased the fuel costs of ships by $8 billion and reduced the emissions by 41 million tons. Intersleek is then contributing positively to the marine sector, with the company aiming to reduce carbon emissions along the entire value chain by 50% by 2030.
“Our groundbreaking Intersleek range has set new standards for efficiency, performance and sustainability in the marine industry when it comes to biocide-free performance. Together with our customers, Intersleek has the largest foul release track record, gathered from 20 years of vessel performance data that proves our coatings have helped save ship owners $19.6 billion dollars in fuel costs and 103 million tons of CO2 to help them hit carbon targets,” has stated Chris Birkert, Manager of the Marine Coatings Segment at AkzoNobel.
