This collaboration aims to advance dry electrode coating technology, eliminating the need for traditional wet coating methods.

The multinational engineering company Dürr Systems AG has recently joined forces with LiCAP Technologies Inc. and Cellforce Group GmbH to transform battery cell production.

This strategic alliance builds upon Dürr’s previous partnership with LiCAP and its acquisition of French mechanical engineering firm Ingecal. So, with the addition of Cellforce, a subsidiary of luxury sports car manufacturer Porsche, the initiative is set to take a significant leap forward.

"By collaborating with LiCAP, Dürr is broadening its dry coating solutions to support customers like Cellforce in adopting this innovative dry electrode production process," has stated Bernhard Bruhn, Vice-President Global Business LIB.

Sustainable Battery Production with Activated Dry Electrode® Technology

At the core of this development is LiCAP’s patented Activated Dry Electrode® technology, which enhances battery performance while drastically reducing environmental impact. Unlike conventional liquid coating, this process eliminates the use of toxic solvents and energy-intensive drying ovens – thus reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to one ton/10 kWh of electrode capacity produced.

Scaling Up for Industrial Application

Cellforce recently secured a license for LiCAP’s breakthrough technology, a pivotal step toward industrial-scale implementation. Dürr has already commissioned a gigawatt-scale proof-of-concept cathode line in Chassieu (France), setting the stage for widespread adoption.

Engineering the Future of Sustainable Manufacturing

As a global leader in mechanical and plant engineering, Dürr is at the forefront of automation, digitalisation, and energy-efficient solutions. The company serves diverse industries, including automotive, medical devices, and battery production.
