The new products in the Evonik TEGO® Therm portfolio offer thermal insulation and fire resistance to mitigate the risk of thermal runaway in EV batteries.
The Coating Additives business line of Evonik has recently announced that it is expanding its TEGO® Therm product range in order to offer heat protection and fire-resistant coatings for electric vehicle (EV) battery housings and covers. The new solutions provide improved safety while meeting reliable mechanical properties and flame-retardant standards, such as the UL 94 V-0 classification.
In the increasingly growing market of electric vehicles, the safety standards concerning lithium-ion batteries are quickly becoming more and more stringent, so the industry needs effective thermal insulation barriers – that are fundamental for preventing thermal runaway in the batteries. The TEGO Therm range includes several products which have been specifically engineered to enhance the performances of thermal insulation and fire-resistant coatings. Furthermore, the easy spray application allows to completely and efficiently cover the entire housing.
“With the electric mobility sector accelerating, the safety of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles has never been more crucial. TEGO Therm is our response to the industry's call for reliable thermal barriers that not only meet but surpass the stringent safety standards of today,” has declared Benjamin Schaeffner, the global head of the Industrial and Transportation Coatings market segment at the Coating Additives division of Evonik.
The new Evonik TEGO Therm portfolio for EV batteries
- TEGO Therm HPG 4000 granules boast a microporous silica core, which provides superior low thermal conductivity, high hydrophobicity and reduced flammability;
- TEGO Therm HPG 6806 is a finer silica-based granule excelling in insulation, strengthening the mechanical performances and providing smooth surfaces;
- TEGO Therm L 300 is a waterborne polysiloxane hybrid binder that further enhances the thermal stability and fire resistance of protective coatings.
Meeting Flame-Retardant Standards
The coatings belonging to this portfolio meet the UL 94 V-0 fire safety standards, providing a new level of protection for the batteries of electric vehicles. When subjected to a propylene flame with more than 1000 °C, they protected the substrate, with the temperature on the back of substrate remaining moderate even with a thin dry film thickness.
“The synergy between TEGO Therm binder and granules is at the core of our solution. It minimises heat transfer and effectively inhibits the spread of fires, offering crucial additional time for emergency response. Moreover, our products ensure high mechanical resistance, maintaining structural integrity in high-temperature scenarios,” has added Niko Haberkorn, the global head of business development for the Industrial and Transportation Coatings market segment at the Coating Additives division of Evonik. “Their versatility allows for spray application on complex three-dimensional substrates, ensuring complete and efficient fire resistance of the coverage of every contour of the battery housing.”
