The validation underscores the proactive role of Sika in decarbonising the construction and automotive industries.
The specialty chemicals company Sika has recently announced that its near and long-term emissions reduction targets, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The important achievement underscores the commitment of Sika to sustainability and its proactive role in decarbonising the construction and automotive industries.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute and the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Together, they develop standards, tools and guidance that enable companies to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in line with the levels needed to limit global warming and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
As a matter of fact, Sika is committed to reducing its emissions by 50.4% by 2032, including direct emissions from owned or controlled sources as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling. Over the same period, the company is also committed to reducing its scope 3 emissions by 30%, which includes all other indirect emissions in the value chain, such as those from purchased goods and services, upstream and downstream transportation and waste disposal.
“We are proud to have received the SBTi validation for our net-zero targets. By actively working with our partners, suppliers, and customers, we are driving industry-wide initiatives to mitigate climate change and open up new business opportunities. This reassures us that we are on the right path to delivering sustainable solutions that meet today’s needs without compromising the future,” has stated Patricia Heidtman, the Chief Innovation and Sustainability Officer of Sika.
According to the company, addressing climate change is vital for the planet as well as for business resilience and long-term success. The combined emissions reduction target for scopes 1, 2, and 3 is 30.4% by 2032 and 90% by 2050. By developing and providing sustainable solutions, it will then continue to drive both its own and its customers’ journey to net zero.
